Maleic acid, with the chemical formula HO2CCHCHCO2H, is a dicarboxylic acid, i.e. an organic compound containing two carboxylic acid functional groups. Maleic acid and fumaric acid (antisuccinic acid) are cis-trans isomers of each other.
Maleic acid is mainly used in pharmaceuticals, resin synthesis, and as a preservative for oils and fats. In the biomedical field, maleic acid is used as a component in drug development. Maleic acid is salted with chlorpheniramine to obtain chlorpheniramine maleate, which is commonly used as an antihistamine. In the food field, neither maleic acid nor its anhydride is an approved food additive, but the US and EU have limited permission to use maleic anhydride in packages that come into direct or indirect contact with food. In the cosmetic field, the use of maleic acid as an acid-base modifier in cosmetics is also permitted in the US.
v-innovate Technologies provides qualitative and quantitative analysis of maleic acid and related compounds based on high performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS) technology.
